Government Blocking Mobile Numbers! Did You Get This Call? Here’s What You Need to Know
Rajasthan News
New Delhi: In recent days, many mobile phone users across India have reported receiving alarming calls claiming that their mobile numbers would soon be blocked. The callers purport to be from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and warn that the user’s number will be disconnected due to “abnormal phone behavior.” If you’ve received such a call, it’s important to remain cautious—these calls are fraudulent.
The government has responded to this growing concern by issuing an official statement through the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Government of India’s press agency. According to the PIB, these calls are part of a scam run by cybercriminals attempting to deceive unsuspecting individuals into providing personal information or paying for unnecessary services.
How Scam Works
The scam works by deceiving mobile users into thinking that their mobile number is at risk of being blocked due to unusual activity or other fabricated reasons. The callers often pose as representatives of TRAI, the national regulatory body that oversees telecom services in India. They claim that the number will be deactivated unless immediate action is taken, such as responding to a message, paying a fee, or providing sensitive personal details.
This scam is particularly dangerous because the callers often use technical jargon, making it appear legitimate. They may even reference specific details about the user’s account, making the victim believe the threat is real. In some cases, the fraudsters might also ask for verification details such as account numbers, PINs, or other confidential information, which they can use for malicious purposes.
PIB’s Clarification
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has stepped in to alert the public in response to these fraudulent calls. The PIB issued a tweet clarifying the situation and urging people to be wary of such calls. In the tweet, the PIB stated: “Are you also getting calls from TRAI claiming that your mobile number will soon be blocked due to abnormal phone behavior?”
PIB categorically denied the legitimacy of these calls and warned that they were part of a scam. According to the PIB, TRAI, as a telecom regulator, does not make phone calls or send messages to customers about the disconnection of mobile numbers. The tweet further emphasized that no government agency will ever ask for personal or financial information via unsolicited phone calls.
This message from the PIB is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to educate the public about the growing threat of cybercrimes and scams that exploit people’s trust and fear. Users must understand that TRAI, or any legitimate government or telecom body, will not contact them in this manner.
The Role of TRAI and Telecom Authorities
TRAI is a statutory body established by the Government of India to regulate telecom services in the country. Its role includes ensuring fair competition, protecting consumer interests, and promoting the development of telecom infrastructure and services. However, TRAI does not directly handle the blocking or disconnection of individual mobile numbers based on user activity.
Telecom operators, such as Bharti Airtel, Jio, Vodafone-Idea, and others, are responsible for managing mobile connections and addressing any issues related to service disruptions. The respective telecom provider, not TRAI, would communicate any legitimate action regarding deactivating a mobile number through official channels.
Users should always rely on their telecom service providers for account information. If they have any service-related issues, they should contact customer service directly at verified numbers.
How to Protect Yourself from Fraudulent Calls
- Do Not Share Personal Information: Never share sensitive information such as your bank account details, Aadhaar number, PIN, or OTP over the phone, especially if the call is unsolicited. Legitimate organizations, including TRAI and telecom providers, will never ask for such details in this manner.
- Verify the Caller: If you receive a call claiming to be from TRAI or your telecom provider, hang up and call the official customer service number provided on your provider’s website or your phone bill. Do not use the phone number provided by the caller.
- Look for Red Flags: Be wary of calls that pressure you to act quickly, such as demanding immediate payment or threatening you with penalties or disconnection. Legitimate companies will provide ample time to resolve issues or address service disruptions.
- Report Suspicious Calls: If you receive a suspicious call or message, you should report it to your telecom provider and, if necessary, file a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell. The government also encourages people to report such incidents to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (https://cybercrime.gov.in).
- Educate Others: Many people, particularly older people or those not well-versed in technology, may fall victim to these scams. Please share this information with your family and friends to help them stay safe from fraud.
Government’s Ongoing Efforts to Combat Cybercrime
Cybercrime has been a growing concern in India, with cybercriminals constantly devising new schemes to exploit unsuspecting citizens. The government has been actively working to raise awareness and combat these threats. PIB regularly issues alerts and clarifications to inform the public about emerging scams.
The government has taken various steps to enhance cybersecurity in the country. Law enforcement agencies, including the Cyber Crime Cells in multiple states, work closely with telecom operators and tech companies to track and prevent cyber crimes. Moreover, platforms like the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal provide a convenient way for citizens to report online fraud and seek assistance.
The growing number of online frauds has led to increased cooperation between the government, law enforcement agencies, and telecom providers to address the issue. The aim is to create a safer online environment and prevent exploiting vulnerable individuals.
