Alia Bhatt’s Jigra Cleared for Release in Rajasthan After Trademark Dispute Resolved

Rajasthan News

A commercial court in Jodhpur had imposed a stay on the release of Jigra due to a trademark infringement claim. However, on Thursday, the Rajasthan High Court lifted the stay, clearing the way for the film’s release on October 11. The film, produced by Dharma Productions, stars Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina as siblings.

Alia Bhatt’s Jigra Gets Court Clearance For Release In Rajasthan After Trademark Violation Application

Alia Bhatt’s film Jigra received clearance from the Rajasthan High Court on Thursday, allowing its release on October 11. This decision lifted a stay that was imposed by a commercial court in Jodhpur just two days prior concerning a trademark infringement application.

What was the complaint about?
On October 8, an interim injunction order was issued after Bhallaram Choudhary filed a plea alleging trademark violation, claiming that “Jigra” was his trademark. Choudhary operates online classes under this name, for which he secured a trademark in September 2023 under The Trade Marks Act (1999), Class 41, which pertains to education, entertainment, and training. Consequently, he sought a stay on the film’s release.

How did the makers defend Jigra?
Dharma Productions pointed to its own trademark registrations across various Classes, excluding Class 41. Senior advocate Vikas Balia asserted that the appellant was not involved in any trade of goods or services that would breach the Trade Marks Act through the production of the film. A Division Bench, which included Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Munnuri Laxman, determined that, on a prima facie basis, Jigra did not violate trademark rights. This decision is a relief for the filmmakers, who are eager to release the movie with great fanfare during the festive Dussehra weekend.

About Jigra
Jigra narrates the tale of a sister determined to protect her brother. The film also features Vedang Raina in his second appearance, following his debut in The Archies last year. Directed by Vasan Bala, known for his previous works such as Monica O My Darling, the crime thriller Peddlers, and Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, Jigra has been co-produced and presented by Dharma Productions, Viacom18 Studios, and Eternal Sunshine Productions.

The RajCop app is becoming a valuable tool for Rajasthan Police. By simply uploading a criminal’s photo, their entire record is instantly retrieved, greatly aiding in case investigations and expediting the process of solving crimes.

The RajCop mobile app is proving to be a significant asset for Rajasthan Police.
